Ask a Pharmacist

Another year has wrapped up and so has the 2017 edition of the Health Matters workshops. Offered by Townshippers’ Association in partnership with Avante Women’s Centre, these free workshops connect community members with information, in English, covering a range of topics using resources produced by health professionals, provided by the Community Health Education Program (CHEP) and the Community Health and Social Services Network (CHSSN).

The last Health Matters session on December 15, “The changing role of the Pharmacist- Ask a Pharmacist”, covered information that is useful for everyone to know. It is always recommended to go to your doctor if you have a health concern, but did you know that when it comes to certain common conditions, the pharmacist can suggest medication without a diagnosis?

For example, if you or a loved one are pregnant, and you want information on vitamins or supplements, speak with your pharmacist; if you’re suffering from minor acne, menstrual pain, or hemorrhoids, your pharmacist can help. In time-sensitive situations, such as a need for emergency oral contraception or have treatment of a urinary tract or yeast infection, visiting your pharmacist can save you a long wait in an emergency room.

If you are interested in knowing the many ways in which your pharmacist can save you a trip to the doctor’s office, we encourage you to go and speak with your local pharmacist to find out what services they offer. Services vary based on the available equipment and/or if there is a nurse on staff. Some pharmacists can adjust the prescription type and frequency, extend prescriptions and prescribe laboratory tests and adjust the treatment.

Be aware that certain services may come with a fee, as these are covered by your prescription drug plan, not by the public health insurance plan. But staying informed about the role of your pharmacist can save you time and anguish when looking to remedy a common or reoccurring condition. If you are ever unsure if you need to see a doctor, another front-line resource is InfoSanté at 811.

Townshippers’ and Avante hope you will join us for more Health Matters sessions in 2018. Health Matters is A CHSSN initiative funded by Health Canada through the Roadmap for Canada’s Official Languages 2013-2018: Education, Immigration, Communities.

Always see a medical professional in the case of an emergency, but for many common conditions, the pharmacist may be able to help.
