The written word and illustrations can tell us a lot about who we were, which helps us better understand who we are today. In September 2016, Townshippers’ Association launched the Our Stories project as a way to celebrate our community’s part in Canada’s sesquicentennial story. To commemorate Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation, written and visual submissions were accepted to feature in a digital publication that would highlight our region’s historical roots, share the experience of settlers, and recognize our community’s role, or that of individuals, in shaping the province and/or the nation.
The project evolved to include writing workshop series. Held across the region, the workshops helped both new and experienced writers, young and old, hone their writing skills in a myriad of genres including memoir, poetry, short fiction. Several workshop participants also contributed their work to the ebook.
The final product, Our Stories: The Eastern Townships Chapter in Canada’s 150-year story focuses on the influence and role that Townshippers – the English-speaking community of Quebec’s historical Eastern Townships – have had on the fabric of Canada. Through various genres and mediums, 25 contributors examine the nuances of this community’s experiences, its characters, its contributions and its spirit.
