Caregivers

If you are devoting your time to helping someone, you are a caregiver. As a caregiver, you are one of an estimated 7 million caregivers in Canada. Despite the numbers, caregivers can often get lost in the responsibilities and feel isolated. It is important to know you are not alone, resources and activities exist to help caregivers. This page aims to connect English-speaking caregivers in the Eastern Townships with useful activities and information.

Caregivers’ Café

Held in Knowlton, these monthly meetings give caregivers information related to themselves and to their loved ones. For details, contact Townshippers’ Lac-Brome office at 450-242-4421.

Food for Thought

Once a month individuals in the English-speaking community who are caring for an older adult have the chance to enjoy lunch while listening to a local expert at the Food for Thought learning luncheons. These events have covered a variety of useful topics such as making medical decisions, compassion fatigue, legal paperwork and what to do when a loved one passes away. Caregivers often have the chance to ask questions and interact with other caregivers.

Magog: offered at the St. Paul’s United Church meeting hall, at 211 des Pins, Magog, and usually, costs $7 (payable at the door). Upcoming events are listed on Townshippers’ calendar and the Association Facebook page.

Food for Thought is made possible thanks to the Tillotson Coaticook Region Fund and is a CHSSN initiative funded by Health Canada through the Roadmap for Canada’s Official Languages 2013-2018: Education, Immigration, Communities.

Whether by choice or circumstances, care giving for a family member, friend or neighbour can be a rewarding experience, but it can also be challenging. The Information and Support Guide for Caregivers was created help current and future caregivers who are caring for an elderly family member or friend, whether planned or unexpected. The guide offers advice on various aspects of care,  as well as useful tips to help caregivers adapt to their new lifestyle and living arrangements in order to ensure a better quality of life for both the caregiver and the person they are caring for.

The Cargivers guide is an initiative of the Table de réflexion et d’action des retraités et des aînés de La MRC Rivière-du-Nord with support from l’Appui Laurentides and CISSS des Laurentides

Caregivers Forum

With expert presenters, workshops and information booths, the annual Caregivers Forum connects current or future caregivers to knowledge and tools. This free, informative event will also connect caregivers to existing and emerging services and service providers. The Forum is usually held in March at the Memphrémagog Community Learning Center, located at Princess Elizabeth Elementary School, 120 Bellevue in Magog.
