The Eaton Corner Museum was originally the idea of the Compton County Women’s Institute, and English language organization which voices the concerns of rural women, similar to Le Cercles des Fermieres. These women, mostly homemakers, wanted to leave a tangible legacy for posterity. They wanted future generations to understand how their ancestors lived.

To reach this goal, in 1959 a corporation was formed which acquired the former Congregationalist  Church with a goal of turning it into a regional museum, collecting historic objects from throughout Compton County. The Compton County Historical Society received its letters patent on March 20, 1959, and purchased the church in May of that year.

Soon afterward, in 1961, the provincial government declared the church to be a historical building. The
Eaton Academy across the street received the same protection in 1963.

Over the years the Museum’s collection has taken shape and has been displayed in various ways.
Several fundraising events are held every year, both to maintain our historic buildings and to finance the conservation and the display of our artifacts and archives.

$10 Admission includes Tea Service with homemade scones and jam.
Demonstrations of heritage crafts, antique machinery and “Old Time” music.

Many devoted volunteers carry on the work of the pioneering Women’s Institutes to preserve our knowledge of yesterdays way of life. It is thanks to their foresight, carried on by our volunteers that our local history remains with us today and tomorrow.
