First Do-ET career and skills days a success!

The first of three Unlock your Future: Do-ET events from Townshippers’ Association went off without a hitch at Massey-Vanier High School in Cowansville last Wednesday, exceeding all expectations, according to Project coordinator, Jayme Marrotte.

In collaboration with the Massey-Vanier guidance counselor, Jayme organized a half-day event giving secondary 4 and 5 students a chance to explore their future with many diverse opportunities in the Eastern Townships.

Students were also able to participate in career panels in an industry of their interest, workshops to build post-secondary skills, and network with employers, and educational institutions and resources available to them in the region.

Students were excited to hear from our Keynote speaker, Steve Charbonneau, a retired pro football player from the Montreal Alouettes who returned to the Townships and now oversees the Adaptive Sports Foundation.

We look forward to the next event at Richmond Regional High School on December 6.

Pizza for youth perspective!

Do you have an opinion about what is important to English-speaking youth today and ideas for the future? Townshippers’ and Les Reseau des Carrefours Jeunesse Emploi (RCJEQ), are looking for participants for a youth focus group on Thursday, November 30, from 5:00-6:30 pm at the Association’s office 257 Queen, Sherbrooke (Lennoxville). Specifically, we are looking for the perspective of English-speaking youth aged 16-35 and anyone who represents or works with English-speaking youth.

The purpose of the My Voice Counts! Focus group is to give the English-speaking community a voice on youth issues and bring people together with the CJEs to build greater awareness of the needs of our community’s youth. All ideas put forward from the discussion will be shared in detail with RCJEQ to help them strategize. Pizza and refreshments will be served.

To participate, please register with Katie Bibbs at [email protected], or call 819-566-5717.

Preparing for a healthy winter

Our transition into the cold months of winter offers us a special opportunity to tend to different aspects of our existence – our need for rest and contemplation, and our want for resilience and hardy immune systems. Jessica Marais, a second-generation herbalist accredited with the Guilde des Herboristes du Quebec, and a certified Organic Master Gardener, will help caregivers and the community members learn how herbs and whole foods can help us prepare for a happy and healthy winter at the Food for Thought learning lunch in Magog on Friday, December 1.

Join us at St. Paul’s United Church hall, 211 rue des Pins, at 12 noon for a lunch of meatballs in honey garlic sauce over rice, and homemade apple pie ($7), and stay for Jessica’s presentation at 1 pm. No registration required.

The Food for Thought learning lunches from Townshippers’ connects caregivers in the English-speaking community with relevant information and resources through expert-led presentations. These events also give caregivers a chance to meet and support each other.

If you are in the Haut-Saint-François region, you can catch Jessica’s presentation during a very special complimentary Health Link presentation on Thursday, December 7, from 11 am to 3 pm at the Manoir de l’eau vive – 210 Principale Est, Cookshire-Eaton. This event will also include tips on staying safe and healthy this winter and information about free activities.

Lunch provided ($5). Please register by Friday, December 1, with Michelle at [email protected] or call Townshippers’ 819-566-5717.

Food For Thought/Health Link is made possible by the Tillotson Coaticook Region Fund and is a CHSSN initiative funded by Health Canada through the Roadmap for Canada’s Official Languages 2013-2018: Education, Immigration, Communities. The views expressed herein do not necessarily represent the views of Health Canada.

Health Link is a collaboration between the Eaton Valley Community Learning Centre, the CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS’s Haut-Saint-François RLS, the Centre d’Action Bénévole du Haut-Saint-François, and Townshippers’.

Legal clinic wraps for 2017

The free legal Information Clinic offered by Townshippers’ Association and the Université de Sherbrooke’s Law Faculty has wrapped up for the holiday season. If you submitted a question by email, it will be answered in mid-January when the clinic reopens. Many thanks to our volunteering law students Sasha Munizaga and Laura Pronovost for their work so far.
