Townshippers’ free income tax preparation clinic is moving to Literacy in Action!

SHERBROOKE, February 22, 2018 – Townshippers’ Association announces the migration of its long-running free income tax preparation clinic for qualifying members of the English-speaking community to the very capable hands of its colleagues at Literacy in Action.

The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program, established by the Canada Revenue Agency, helps low-income taxpayers, such as seniors and students, with simple, non-complex tax situations, to file their tax returns, ensuring they receive the tax credits and benefits they are entitled to.

Townshippers’ began offering the free volunteer tax preparation clinic in 2005, serving 45 clients in the first year. After maintaining this clinic for many years and helping over 300 clients in the last tax season, the time has come to handover over the reins.

“Our role as an agent of community development in the Townships is often best exercised when Townshippers’ acts as a liaison and/or advocate rather than that of a direct service provider,” explained the Association’s Executive Director Rachel Hunting. “In this case, our colleagues at Literacy in Action have a mandate and setup that is much better suited to deliver this program than we do, and we are thrilled at their interest in taking it on.”

As a not-for-profit organization offering free educational activities and services, the clinic fits well with Literacy in Action’s current offerings.

“We are excited to take on this new opportunity because it will help us connect to the English-speaking community in a new way,” commented Joanna Bateman, executive director of Literacy in Action.

Community members will be able to access the free income tax clinic through Literacy in Action beginning on March 12, 2018. For complete information, please contact Literacy in Action’s team of volunteers at 819-346-7009 or visit

Literacy in Action functions as a network for inter-professional collaboration to foster a community of learners throughout the Estrie region. It is a volunteer-based, non-profit organization providing tutors and parents literacy-related resources and training. Literacy in Action’s mandate is to create learning opportunities for English speakers by offering free, one-to-one tutoring for adults (16 years and older) and community-based activities for everyone.
