Free Income Tax Clinic

Since 2005, Townshippers’ Association has helped low-income taxpayers to receive or continue receiving tax credits and benefits by participating in the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP).

Established by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), volunteer tax preparation clinics across the country assist eligible taxpayers who have low income,  such as social assistance recipients, newcomers to Canada, seniors and students, who have simple, non-complex tax situations.

As a community partner, Townshippers’ and a team of dedicated volunteers have helped members of the English-speaking community to prepare and file their taxes. In our first year the service assisted about 45 clients, by 2012 that number had grown to 200.

Are you eligible for help?

You may be eligible if you have a modest income and a simple tax situation.

A simple tax situation means you have no income or if your income comes from these sources:

 employment

 pension

benefits such as CPP, disability, CCB, EI, social assistance

 RRSP

 support payments

 scholarships, fellowships, bursaries or grants

 interest (under $1,000)

Your tax situation is not simple if you:

are self-employed or have employment expenses

have business or rental income and expenses

 have capital gains or losses

 file for bankruptcy

are completing a tax return for a deceased person
