Townshippers’ Association presents the
Sherbrooke premiere of ”Home Child” by Laura Teasdale

SHERBROOKE, January 5, 2017 – Townshippers’ Association is starting off the new year with a look at the past through the Sherbrooke premiere of the thought-provoking English-language arts production, “Home Child.” Written and directed by Laura Teasdale, the production inspired by a true story of the Township’s forgotten past. Home Child is presented for one-night only on Saturday, January 14, 2017, at 7 p.m. in Bandeen Hall at Bishop’s University.

Descendants of the home children make up 11% of Canada’s population, yet their existence is one of Canada’s best kept secrets. From 1869 to 1938, more than 100,000 British children were relocated from workhouses and orphanages, to work as indentured servants across Canada. Between 1872 to 1912, the Knowlton Distributing Home under the direction of Annie MacPherson accepted almost 5,000 British children and found local families to take them in. The stories of their experiences range from fairy tale happiness to absolute horror.

Insightful, touching and at times comedic with a sprinkling of music, Home Child is based on this true story from a complex and fascinating part of Eastern Townships history. The year is 1894. One London girl, Poppy (Natalie Demmon), is sent away across the vast Atlantic into the great unknown of Quebec. One Eastern Townships boy, Matthew (Nicolas Retson-Fournier), struggles to make room for her in his family and in his heart.

With the support of the Government of Canada, Townshippers’ Association is pleased to present Home Child on Saturday, January 14 at 7:00 p.m., at Bandeen Hall, Bishop’s University, 2600 rue College.

Tickets, $15 advanced sale and Townshippers’ Association member pricing, or $20 at the door, can be purchased online at Townshippers.org/HC or by calling Townshippers’ at 819-566-5717 (toll free 1-877-566-5717).
