Write here, Write now! Writing Workshops
Following the runaway success of “Our Stories” last year, Townshippers’ Association has launched a new project with a focus on creative writing: Write here, Write now!
Coordinated by Jan Draper, with assistance from Etienne Domingue and Melanie Cutting (an “Our Stories” alum), this federally-funded project is in response to a need expressed by the Townships’ English-speaking community. (In a 2016 Townshippers’ Association survey, literary events were ranked among the top three cultural activities requested by respondents.)
In partnership with Bishop’s University’s Senior Academy for Lifelong Learning as well as the Quebec Anglophone Heritage Network (QAHN), Write here, Write now! will, over the course of the next two years, be offering a wide range of workshops. , Launched this past June, and geared to the expressed needs of Townshippers, workshops will be held several times a month, led by Jan, Etienne, and Melanie. The workshops will be held in Bury, Lennoxville, Knowlton, and North Hatley, with a possibility of other locations to come.
Topics will range from memoir, to sci-fi/fantasy, to poetry, and beyond, in response to suggestions from our participants. Creative output will be published in local media and on the Townshippers’ Association website, culminating in an “ebook”.
In 2019, the second year of the project, the focus will shift to organizing workshops with sustainability in mind. These will be workshops as usual but with the training of volunteer writing workshop facilitators highlighted, through training in:
• How to read your work to an audience
• How to facilitate workshops for kids and organize a reading for parents
• How to prepare an e-book
• Development with participants of a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) web page for the
Organization/Facilitation of Writing Workshops
