The Eastern Townships Resource Centre invites you to attend the 21th Annual Robin Burns Lecture on Wednesday, November 27, 2019, at 7:00 pm, in the Cleghorn Common Room (McGreer) on the Bishop’s University campus.
This year, we are screening the new short documentary CANUSA, which visits the three Quebec border towns of Rock Island, Stanstead and Beebe, and the Vermont town of Derby Line. This documentary tells the story of how residents and officials cope with a civic life that is cut down in the middle by an international boundary.
This borderland community, while straddling two nations, has built and shared a common local history. For decades residents have crossed (or simply ignored) the border, and have together built social and cultural institutions. Churches, recreational centres, community sports fields and skating rinks, libraries and archives, and even schools, have shaped a collective local identity.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with the movie maker Perry Walker, historian and archivist Jody Robinson and the journalist Robin Smith. Author Ross Murray will guide you through the evening.
The event is organized with the financial support of Bishop’s University’s Speakers Committee. The event is free and everybody is welcome.
